Literacy Partners
Arlington Reads offers one-on-one tutoring to adult learners seeking to develop and improve their reading and writing skills in English. The mission of Arlington Reeds is to increase adult enrollment and retention in literacy programs conducted in Arlington, Texas, and to improve the effectiveness of adult literacy programs in Arlington.
The mission of the John Corcoran Foundation, Inc. is to facilitate the prevention and eradication of illiteracy in adults and children across America, through a specialized, effective and proven training and tutoring program, as well as the creation and dissemination of relevant and targeted literacy resources and enhanced public awareness.
Literacy Texas offers literacy resources, training, networking and advocacy in the state of Texas. The vision of Literacy Texas is that every literacy organization in Texas will have the resources it needs to help as many people as possible learn basic literacy skills in order to participate fully in society. Literacy Texas is the Texas state literacy coalition.
Literacy ConneXus is the new name for literacy missions in Texas. In some settings, collaborations with local literacy providers may result in joint training experiences. In other settings, Literacy ConneXus will provide the entire training program for volunteers. In all settings, we encourage community participation in our programs.
Libraries for Literacy, a project facilitated by the North Texas Regional Library System (NTRLS) and supported by partner organizations, will endeavor to establish literacy instruction programs in all types of north Texas libraries. NTRLS will rely on its partners to provide the instruction and give advice on best practices when it comes to literacy instruction. Through Libraries for Literacy, all forms of literacy training will be offered, including Reading / Writing, Adult and Family Literacy, English as a Second Language, and GED preparation.
Founded in 1961 by the local chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women, Literacy Instruction for Texas has grown into one of the largest and most widely respected adult literacy education programs in the United States. LIFT’s mission is to enhance lives and strengthen communities by raising the adult literacy rate in Texas. Between 2004 and the end of 2007, the number of adult learners participating in LIFT programs increased by 292 percent from 2,103 to 6,141. In the past year alone, LIFT has served more than 8,000 adult learners.
Amachi Texas is a joint initiative between the Office of the Governor, The Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Texas Workforce Commission, OneStar Foundation and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Texas. Amachi Texas is one program within Big Brothers Big Sisters, which focuses on mentoring children of incarcerated family members, including family members who are on parole or probation.
The Learning Center of North Texas supports literacy programs in Tarrant County by providing professional development, resources, instructional support, administrative/program support, and assessment. Since 2007 United Way of Tarrant County has included TLCNT as a community partner in its efforts to support adult literacy.
